FedEx 2027 General Rate Increase: What Shippers Need to Know
Oct 6, 2026 · @Steve
FedEx list rates go up an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027 — and for most small and mid-sized shippers, that number is the floor, not the ceiling.
FedEx announced its 2027 General Rate Increase (GRI) on September 21, 2026. It covers U.S. domestic, export and import package services. That headline matches last year's, but the details tell a different story: surcharges are rising faster than base rates, thousands of ZIP codes are moving into higher delivery-area tiers, and zone assignments change again on February 1.
Here's what's changing, who feels it most, and what to do before your first 2027 invoice arrives.
The numbers by service
The 5.9% is an average across every service, weight and zone — your increase depends on what you ship and where. Lightweight ground parcels and premium air take the biggest hits; Express Saver takes the smallest.
Service | Increase | Example list rate (Zone 2, 1 lb) |
2Day A.M. | 6.65% avg (up to 7.9% in some zones) | — |
Priority Overnight | 6.9% (Zone 2, 1 lb) | $45.22 → $48.34 |
Ground / Home Delivery, 1–5 lb | 6.49% | $11.99 → $12.70 |
2Day | 6.4% | $26.46 → $28.15 |
First Overnight | 6.01% | — |
Standard Overnight | 5.16% | — |
Express Saver | 3.09% | $23.84 → $24.67 |

Why does the real increase run higher than 5.9%? Most contracts discount the base transportation rate but not the accessorials. When the surcharges climb faster than the base — as they do in 2027 — more of your spend lands on lines your discounts never touch. And if your agreement has minimum-charge language, those minimums rise with the list rates even when your percentage discount stays the same.
Surcharges: where the real money moves
Most common surcharges rise 6–10% — faster than the base rate — and the delivery-area map is being redrawn.
Surcharge (U.S. package) | 2026 | 2027 | Change |
Remote DAS (2,533 ZIPs moved from Extended) | $8.80 resi / $5.55 comm | $17.75 | +102% / +220% |
Regularly scheduled pickup (5-day) | $35.50 | $38.95 | +9.7% |
Residential pickup | $5.95 | $6.50 | +9.2% |
Extended DAS, residential | $8.80 | $9.60 | +9.1% |
Extended DAS, commercial | $5.55 | $6.00 | +8.1% |
Oversize, Zones 5+ | $320 | $345 | +7.8% |
Additional Handling, weight (Zone 2) | $46.00 | $49.50 | +7.6% |
Additional Handling, weight (Zone 7+) | $58.75 | $63.00 | +7.2% |
Residential delivery, Ground / Home Delivery | $6.45 | $6.90 | +7.0% |
DAS, residential | $6.60 | $7.00 | +6.1% |
Residential delivery, Express | $6.95 | $7.35 | +5.8% |
Oversize, Home Delivery Zones 3–4 | $275 | $290 | +5.5% |
DAS, commercial | $4.45 | $4.70 | +5.6% |
Three other changes to watch:
DAS map redraw. Beyond the 2,533 ZIPs moving to Remote, 240 ZIPs move from no surcharge into Extended and 45 are newly added. The Remote tier grows more than 70%, from 3,591 to 6,124 ZIP codes (Intelligent Audit).
Zone changes on February 1, 2027. FedEx is reassigning zones for select origin-destination ZIP pairs. As of this writing it hasn't published which pairs.
New paper fees on January 18, 2027. $25 per shipment for non-electronic trade documents and $5 per manual paper air waybill (FedEx).
Who gets hit hardest
Four shipper profiles will see increases well above 5.9%:
Lightweight e-commerce shippers. Ground parcels from 1 to 5 lb rise about 6.5%. Add a residential charge and a DAS charge on top, and a $12 parcel can carry close to $14 in accessorials.
Rural and small-town delivery. If your customers live outside metro areas — common across Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas — check the new DAS ZIP lists. A ZIP moving from Extended to Remote roughly doubles the residential surcharge, from $8.80 to $17.75.
Heavy, bulky or oddly shaped products. Additional Handling rises up to 7.6% and Oversize up to 7.8%. Manufacturers and distributors shipping parts, equipment or furniture feel this on every carton.
2Day and overnight users. 2Day A.M. and Priority Overnight rise close to 7%, while Express Saver rises about 3%. Transit-tolerant freight on 2Day is worth re-modeling on Express Saver.
What to do before January 4
Model your own increase. Re-rate the last 12 months of your FedEx invoices at 2027 list rates and surcharges. That shows your true increase, not the 5.9% average.
Check your ZIPs against the 2027 DAS lists. FedEx publishes them in PDF and Excel on its rate changes page. Flag your top destination ZIPs that move tiers.
Read your contract for what's not discounted. Look at residential, DAS, Additional Handling, minimums and fuel. Those lines are where 2027 dollars move, and they are negotiable.
Fix the packaging. A carton that crosses an Additional Handling or Oversize threshold by an inch costs $49.50 to $345 extra per package. Right-sizing often pays for itself in weeks.
Go electronic. Switch to electronic trade documents and air waybills before January 18 to avoid the new $25 and $5 fees.
Audit every invoice. Higher rates mean every billing error — a wrong DAS tier, a misapplied residential charge, an incorrect dimensional adjustment — now costs more. Carriers don't refund what you don't claim.
Get competitive bids. A GRI year is the right time to put your parcel spend out for RFQ, with UPS, regional carriers and USPS in the mix.
